Appropriate Web Sites:

The Adventures of Jasper Woodbury This great site offers previews of the adventures of Jasper Woodbury as well as the theoretical framework of the adventure challenges. this is one of the coolest programs out there for middle school math. You can also use it for social Studies and Language Arts quite easily.

The Math Forum This is an interesting site I found that offers a place for students to get new math problems to work on each week as well as Internet activities and projects that they can do. There is a section for math teachers where they can share lesson plans, learn about math software and find out about educational workshops. Quite cool!

NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics): This site gives the NCTM standards as well as a page specifically for teachers, called Teachers Corner. The Teachers Corner page offers opportunities for Professional Development, Web resources, teaching resources and activities for your classroom. Their is also a Family Corner page which offers an overview of math organizations, a section to aid in your understanding of the NCTM Standards and additional math resources for families.

MICLIMB MATH This site was created by the Michigan Department of Education to clarify each core area benchmark. Viewers can search for benchmarks in three different ways: using the Benchmark Search Box, the Quick Select Box or the Text Search. Once you click the grade level and the strand you want to see, the resulting page displays the content standards and benchmarks.

MMAP (Middle School Mathematics Through Applications) This site reminds me of the Jasper Project. It is from the MMAP curriculum which integrate technology and other disciplines. The site links to descriptions and summaries of each curricular level and also lists materials and resources as well as current seminars across the country.

Example Lesson Plans:

Education World/"As Easy as PI" This lesson was submitted to the Education World web site lesson plan database by Brenda Lium of Agassiz Middle School, Fargo, North Dakota. In the lesson, students conduct a scavenger hunt to find circular objects at home, then use the objects to find the pattern of pi. This is a cool lesson and a great site. If you submit a lesson of yours and they use it, they will pay you $50. Click here to read details about this particular lesson geared for grades 6-8 geometry. Family Education Network / "Investigating Median, Mode, and Mean" This lesson is quite lengthy, but none-the-less intriguing. The lesson provides students with an opportunity to identify and apply median, mode, range, and mean. You can teach the lesson all at once, or divide it into three or gour smaller lessons, each taking about 15-20 minutes. All materials are included and you can find them as well as read more about this lesson by clicking here.
