PROJECT: SKILL
Student Kowledge Inspiring Lifelong Learning

Eighth grade Technology Literacy students used the Inspiration concept mapping program to brainstorm challenges that senior citizens face each day. They talked about 21st century learning skills and the idea of "learning, unlearning and relearning" and specifically how senior citizens today struggle with technology that changes so rapidly. Once students had an understanding of these issues, they researched the National Council on Aging and AARP to find out more about programs that are available for helping senior citizens today. They learned about Meals on Wheels and the L.E.T.S. transporation system located in Livingston County as well as other programs senior citizens can tap into for help.

We invited senior citizens from the community into our classroom and held three special classes where I taught the class, but each student mentored a senior citizen while learning basic computer skills, how to use and navigate the Internet and how to use email. The idea was for seniors to learn more about computers and the students to learn more about senior citizens. It was great fun and I think everyone benefited from the experience! It is a project that I will definitely do again next year!
