With Veterans' Day coming up in less than two weeks,
students at Howell's Highlander Way Middle School paid tribute to
local veterans with an assembly on Wednesday.
The assembly was put together with Carole Coburn's eighth-grade
technology literacy class leading the way.
"I thought it went smoothly,"
she said.
Beginning the second week of the school year the class began
what Colburn calls SERVE — Students Everywhere Respect Veterans
Everyday. Students researched several veteran organizations such as
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Purple Heart
Society.
Colburn said they learned more about what it means to be a
veteran, and how these organizations assist both veterans and their
families as well as local communities.
On Wednesday, the class put together a "Day of Honor and Tribute"
for local veterans with the technology students doing PowerPoint
presentations, performances from the eighth-grade women's ensemble
and eighth-grade band, and the reading of a poem titled "They Did
Their Share."
The veterans in attendance were happy to see such young students
take part in the
project.
"It's good for the youngsters to pull their history together,"
said Duane Brown, a member of the Livingston County Marine Corps
League. "Most of them don't realize what happened in World War II."
Chauncey Grimes, also a member of the Livingston County Marine
Corps League, said he wants to encourage students and teachers to
keep this up.
"It exposes veterans to young people," he said. "I always enjoy
talking to the young people."
