Behaviorism Example for Adult Learners

Title: Information Technology Training Initiative (ITTI) www.mivu.org
This program, offered through Michigan Virtual University, includes over 700 on-line course titles, most of which are technology or computer related software applications. For this purpose of this cell, I will look specifically at just one class...Microsoft Word 2000 Fundamentals..
Grade Level: Adult learners (but could be used for high school students as well.) Subject: Technology
Goal: The goal of the ITTI program is to to provide high-quality, interactive courses in computer topics and professional development. The goal for this particular course is to provide participants with the fundamental skills to use Microsoft Word 2000 on a daily basis in their workplace.
Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Create and insert text in a Word document.
• Format text in a document.
• Send and save files in Word.
• Manage and organize documents.

NETS Standards connection:
By completing this course, teachers will be able to use technology tools (specifically word processing) and information resources to increase productivity, promote creativity, and facilitate academic learning. They should also be able to use content-specific tools (like software) to support learning and research.

Behaviorist Theory:

Behaviorist theory suggests that human behavior is learned and that it can be unlearned. It is primarily rooted in the concept of observable and measurable aspects of human behavior. Based on B. F. Skinner's (1904-1990) work, teachers have found that reinforcement is a means of controlling and motivating student behavior. Its various applications to classroom practice are commonly called "behavior modification", a technique that many teachers consider to be one of their most valuable tools for improving both learning and behavior of their students. The programs found at the site listed below are a great example of the behaviorist approach to learning. The tutorials utilize concepts found in behaviorism, such as:

  • one-on-one learning
  • self-paced
  • immediate feedback given during and after the lessons
  • lessons based on their complexity where simpler tasks are prerequisites for more complex tasks and objectives and are stated at the beginning of each module
  • According to Malcolm Knowles, a widely known and influential professor of adult education, found adult learners to be (among other things):

  • atonymous
  • goal-oriented
  • relevancy-oriented
  • practical

These courses (specifically Word 2000 Fundamentals) allow adults (and specifically teachers) to work at their own pace and on their own time. For teachers or others who are goal-oriented, completion of each course will earn SB-CEU's, which may be important in meeting professional certification requirements. These courses are practical in that the learner decides which lessons to cover and which ones he or she may have already mastered. Once a student decides to take a course, he or she may look at the course info, which lists all of the individual course objectives as well as an approximate time line for completing the course. Once begun, each class offers a pre-assessment test, unit objectives and lessons and a post-assessment test for each unit. During the course, which is played through a program called Web Player, the student runs through the lessons at his/her own pace. Short quiz's are given throughout the course and immediate feedback is given to the student, allowing them to test their knowledge before taking the actual post-assessment test.

Overall, I think this is a great site for adults and especially for teachers. Adults are very autonomous and really value their time. The fact that these courses can be taken and used on one's own time and one's own pace makes them extremely valuable for the goal-oriented person. These classes are FREE for any employee or student at any public education institution in the state of Michigan until March of 2004. For specific help with registering with ITTI, click here.
