This course was taught entirely online. It was my first experience with a completely virtual classroom. I have had hybrid courses before, but never one where everything was done online. It was an interesting experience to say the least. I enjoyed it immensely, in spite of being totally exhausted by the end of the semester. Learning online is definitely a different type of experience, but one that I believe every student should have at least once before they graduate from college with any degree. Since the course was entirely facilitated online, all of the projects or assignments had to be done electronically so that they could be submitted to the professor for evaluation and grading. There were on-going discussions with our small groups held through Blackboard as well as weekly independent assignments which required us to participate in an activity and then reflect upon the affordances technology offered to enhance the activity. Below are links to a few of the reflection papers I turned in during this course. Reflection 2: This reflection was a response written after reading “Technology and Science Teaching: A New Kind of Knowledge” (Wallace, Michigan State University, 2002) In it, Wallace says that “what is missing is knowledge at the intersection pedagogy and technology…” and that “rather than more technical knowledge-about emerging technologies, networking or hardware-what teachers need is knowledge of curriculum-based technologies that work with both the ways teachers teach and what students need to learn” The goal I strive to achieve in my job is to provide that missing knowledge for the teachers or at least help them find that knowledge for themselves. I expand upon this idea in this reflection. Unit 4 Reflection: This reflection was written after working on the The Adventures of Jasper Woodbury Project. The problem we had to try and solve was "Rescue at Boone's Meadow." This portion of the course was quite exciting and engaging for me. I do not consider myself very strong in math, yet this problem had me talking to just about everyone I knew about the scenario and ultimately, my own solution to the question. Unit 7 Reflection: In this reflection, we were given the option to reflect upon several questions, but were required to write about one of them. I chose this question: Are there differences in how technology can support TEACHING as compared to how it can support LEARNING? Explain similarities and differences you see between these two, using examples from the work we have done and/or the readings (for this unit or previous units.) Inspiration Picture: This links to a picture of the concept map I created for this assignment. To view the file in its entirety, you will need to have Inspiration Software loaded on your computer. This particular concept map (links to actual Inspiration file) shows what technology offers that is better than other methods used for teaching, how to create a culture for learning and how technology can be used for unique opportunites. The map can be viewed both as a diagram and as an outline.
